2018 Hiking Hai Ling Peak (Canmore, Alberta)

Getting to the peak at Hai Ling was our second attempt.  Last year, around this time, we reached the tree-line only to turn back after not having enough water with us.  It was 35 degrees Celsius and we left too late in the day and found ourselves thinking it was likely safest to return next time with better planning and an early(ier) launch time.  We did so this year (2018).

We were much better prepared, planned more appropriately, had walking poles (wow, was that a difference), started earlier and had plenty of water (and some food - fruit and energy bars).  We also dressed lightly, took layers and had great footwear.  Who says the gear doesn't matter?  It does!  And, we took our time.  It was a cooler day too at plus 25 Celsius.

We broke the tree-line with little effort this year and plenty of energy to reach the summit.  And, we were certain not to rush and keep our feet well underneath us and worked hard not to over-exert.  Really, what's the hurry.  It made all the difference.  We arrived at the summit, with many others; some arrriving after we passed them on the journey to the top.  Slow and steady wins the race - lol.

It was a busy hill to say the least and the views spectacular.  If you live in Alberta you don not need to venture too far to enjoy some amazing scenery.  It is worth the trip.  All told it took us 4.5 hours (with a little lunch on the saddle just below the summit).  Check out my Gallery for more images of this fine trek.  Who knows where we will be next time.  We'll be sure to share.

Always plenty of peeps on these mountain hikes.  Some prepared, others not so much.
