2019 Greta Canyon Hike (Banff, Alberta)

From the parking area, Greta Canyon was a bit of a hike. There was your average numbers of cars but by any stretch it was a less than busy(ier) day. I remember going west past the parking lot and walking north adjacent to a small body of water and soon realized, “Hey, this isn’t the trail.” And, it was not. We got half way up the west side adjacent water area and it was time to turn around.

Others made the same mistake we did and after we passed them heading south back to the parking lot, it was evident the sign to the trail head was on the south side of the parking lot … rather large one too! We proceeded south not he trail head alongside a large industrial lime stone manufacturing plant and not soon after entered the canyon. We took this picture with Molly just after entry into the canyon. The canyon provided much appreciated shade as you can wee here.

A well deserved rest. It was hot. It was nice to be in the shade.

Dragging the shutter for some time, I set-up slightly west ad down from the falls. I was able to capture the motion of the water and soften the water as a result.

Great light coming in from the south as it travels west. Under partly cloudy skies it was not the best weather for photography but the interplay as a result of the steep canyon provided additional contrasts adding to the charter of the images. I was amazed at the number of trees growing in and around the area and here we are hiking westward beyond the first trail stop at the falls.

As we broke out of the west trail, the canyon began to open up and the breeze was very welcome. The wind was really whistling. We wondered what would cause a tree to bend as it did here. The curve of the tree, I thought laid up quite well in the image, as I adjusted my vantage point, to take advantage of the similar angled ridge. I was not sure what to think of the tree. No camera tricks here.
